Seoul bans fur in Fendi fashion show

SEOUL (AFP) ? South Korea's capital city has told Italian fashion house Fendi to eradicate all fur items from a show of its Fall/Winter album due to complaints from animal rights groups, officials said Monday.

"We have received complaint from animal rights activists and saw harmful public opinion on the Internet... we can't let such a hot thing be staged at a public property," a presenter for the city government told AFP.

Fendi has planned the show on June 2 at a newly-built suspended island on the Han River, which the city wants to promote as a attraction.

The Italian firm said city officials last week exposed to cancel the event unless all fur items were indifferent from the catwalk.

Fendi describe the short notice as "not easy to understand... in light of the months of training and teamwork" leading up to the event.

"I'm shocked to learn of Seoul city's decision to maybe cancel the event if Fendi does not get rid of all fur piece just two weeks before the event," Fendi CEO Michael Burke said in a report Sunday night.

The company, conversely, said it would continue to discuss with city officials in the hope of holding the show as planned.

City officials said conference were still under way to hold the show, at which Fendi planned to nearby 40 pieces from its fall/wintry weather collection as well as 20 fur items.

"This is the first time for us to hold a fashion show on city goods so we knew tiny about how things like this work," a Seoul city bureaucrat told AFP on form of obscurity.

"The show has not been cancelled yet... we are silent working on it."

Fendi said more than 1,200 visitors together with unfamiliar and Korean celebrity, global media and artistic and fashion leaders were planned to listen.
